LAYR is a small New Zealand studio making quiet objects for the home — planters, lamps, and pieces that earn their spot on the shelf.

We started with a simple idea: that the way something is made should show up in how it looks. Our forms are built the way they're named — gathered, woven, tufted, layered — each one carrying its texture on the surface rather than hiding it.

Nothing here is mass-made. Every piece is drawn, tested, and refined until the form settles. Then it's made — one at a time, only when it's ordered.

How It's Made

Each LAYR piece is made to order in New Zealand, built up in fine layers until the form is whole. The texture you see — the ridges, the weave, the quilted grid — isn't added on afterward. It's the making itself, left visible.

Made when you order it. We don't hold shelves of stock or produce in bulk. Your piece is made after you buy it, so nothing is over-produced and nothing sits unsold. It takes a little longer this way. We think it's worth it.

The right material for the job. Some of our planters are made in PETG, a tough, watertight material you can plant straight into. There's no drainage hole — which we like, because it means no saucer and no water marks on your furniture. A little gravel in the base and a light hand on watering keeps your plant happy.

Others are made in PLA, a plant-based material made from renewable crops. These are designed as cover pots: slip your nursery pot inside and lift it out to water. PLA is also what gives our lamps their soft translucency, letting the shade glow evenly and catch the layered texture in the light.

Low waste by design. Making to order means almost nothing is thrown away. Offcuts and the occasional flawed piece are kept back and reground rather than binned.

A note on honesty: PLA is plant-based and renewable, but it isn't something to toss in the home compost — it's made to last on your shelf, not break down in a season. We'd rather tell you plainly than dress it up.
